Abstract
1309366 Ion sources KERNFORSCHUNG mbH GES FUER 9 June 1971 [16 June 1970] 19633/71 Heading H1D A metal wire stirrup 12 acting as a thermionic cathode in an ion source for a cyclotron is provided with a tip 13 of refractory metal or metal carbide located opposite an electron reflector 7. The discharge chamber comprises an enlarged lower part 5 of Mo and a narrower neck portion 2 of tantalum carbide. The discharge is constructed by a magnetic field located in or parallel to the plane of the discharge. The reflector 7 of W or hafnium carbide is insulated from the chamber 2 by an insulator 6 of boron nitrite which may carry a Mo plate to prevent evaporation of the insulator. The tip 13 which may be cylindrical, as shown, or conical is preferably made of hafnium carbide and is located in a holder 15 of Ta having a pin 17 which is brazed into a bore in the bight 14 of the W cathode 12. Alternatively, a pin 17 may be formed on a tip 13 of W, the holder 15 being omitted. Ions are extracted through a slot 9 in the wall of the discharge chamber by an electrode 8. The chamber is filled with deuterium, hydrogen, or helium at a pressure of 0À2 to 0À4 torr.
