Abstract
1,061,453. Molecular beams. UNITED STATES ATOMIC ENERGY COMMISSION. Mareh 19, 1965 [May 13, 1964], No. 11663/65. Heading G6P. [Also in Divisions F1 and H1] In apparatus for establishing a hollow arc discharge in an axial magnetic field, the hollow cathode 12 through which gas is fed is off-set from the axis of the hollow anode 11 and a reflector electrode normally at a floating potential is provided at 7. The feed gas may be argon or hydrogen and the chamber 1 evacuated to a pressure of 5 x 10<SP>-6</SP> mm. Hg. Shield electrodes are provided at 6 and 10. Two or more offset cathodes with corresponding reflector electrodes may be provided. The cathode mounting block may be provided with an aperture for injecting ions or electrons and an aperture provided in electrode 7 to permit axial withdrawal of ions, e.g. to form a spacecharge neutralized beam for space propulsion or for injecting an ion beam into plasma apparatus.
