Abstract
972,344. Ionization manometers. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Sept. 24, 1962 [Sept. 26, 1961], No. 36210/62. Heading H1D. In a magnetron-type ionization gauge comprising a thermionic cathode 6, an anode 3, an ion collecting electrode 11, and electrical bias and magnetic field producing means for operating the gauge beyond cut-off conditions, whereby electrons form a rotating space charge cloud surrounding the cathode, an electrode 17 is provided adjacent the cathode, and within the space charge cloud, to monitor the electron emission from the cathode. The monitor electrode current may serve as a signal for controlling the power supply to the cathode to ensure a constant emission therefrom. As shown, the monitor electrode 17 comprises a probe wire maintained at a potential of 1 to 5 V. The gauge also includes a shield electrode 12 which may alternatively be used as an additional ion collecting electrode. Specific dimensions and operating potentials are given.
