Abstract

976,664. Ion sources. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Feb. 15, 1963 [Feb. 20, 1962], No. 6503/62. Heading H1D. An ion source comprises an emissive cathode 1, a cylindrical anode 5, an apertured extractor cathode 9 and a negative electrode 3 positioned about the emissive cathode 1 externally to the plasma formed in the ion source, and extending towards the extender cathode to apply an electric field to the gap between the cathode and the anode. This negative electrode 3 obviates the need for a magnetic field to form and concentrate the plasma. The tube described is a neutron generator containing a duteriumtritium mixture at 10-40 microns, a target 10 and gas dispenser 13. Specification 850,950 is referred to.
