Abstract

980,947. Heavy-ion-beam tubes. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. June 27, 1962 [June 30, 1961 (2)], Nos. 23823/61 and 23824/61. Heading H1D. A pulsed neutron generator using the D.T. reaction has an ion source comprising two parallel plate cathode members 7, 17 normal to a common axis, plate 7 having holes 10 which define the initial width of the beam, an anode 1 (of a coppernickel alloy, with stressrelieving slots 2) positioned between the cathodes and defining the width of the plasma in the ion source, and a target 13 forming a single stage acceleration gap; the generator also has means for maintaining a magnetic field in the ion source, the field extending deep into the acceleration gap so that the field lines over the entire distance between the cathode members 7, 17 are parallel to the axis. The target 13 may be of molybdenum or nickel, the gas being held in titanium or zirconium. The pressure in the tube may be 10-20 microns. The target 13 being exposed to the air is easily cooled during assembly and operation. Specification 850,950 is referred to.
