Abstract
1,013,403. Electron beam apparatus. W. C. HERAEUS. Aug. 31, 1962 [Aug. 31, 1961], No. 33553/62. Heading H1D. An electron beam generating and deflecting unit for an electron beam smelting furnace or evaporation plant includes an electromagnetic deflection system arranged forwardly of an evacuable electron beam production chamber and structurally combined therewith to form a unit which can be easily attached to or removed from the working chamber of a smelting furnace or evaporation plant. The deflection system includes a ferromagnetic core 12 formed as a ring surrounding the electron beam path and magnetic pole-pieces 14 arranged at the end of the unit adjacent the working chamber. As shown, the electron beam production chamber contains cathode 4, Wehnelt cylinder 7 and accelerating anode 18. The deflecting polepieces 14 are mounted on the end of a casing 8 which contains the remainder of the deflecting system, and a magnetic focusing coil 9, and through which coolant is passed. The polepieces 14 may be so shaped as to correct or alter the cross-section of the deflected electron beam and may be slightly rotatable for this purpose about the beam axis.
