Abstract
918,718. Electron beam apparatus. STAUFFER CHEMICAL CO. March 27, 1961 [June 21, 1960], No. 11007/61. Class 39 (1). In an electron beam furnace a ribbon beam produced by the elongated gun 23, Fig. 1, for bombarding the molten pool 27 is reduced in width and guided in a curved path by a deflecting magnetic field comprising arched lines of force. A beam produced by a gun 21 is also deflected on to the melt stock 18 by the magnetic field. As shown, the guns are disposed behind the bombarded surfaces. Shields 28, 29 are provided to protect the guns. As shown in Fig. 3, the gun 23 includes a directly heated emissive filament 31, a focusing electrode 32 and an accelerating electrode 33. The magnetic system includes a rectangular yoke 41 with polepieces on each side of the molten pool 27 and an energizing winding 42. The magnetic field has a convex boundary which assists in focusing the electron beam. The gun may have an indirectly heated emitter and may be disposed so as to direct the beam horizontally away from the pool or downwardly so that the beam is curved through an angle between 180 degrees and 360 degrees.
