Abstract

1,062,168. Ion sources. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. Aug. 13, 1965 [Aug. 18, 1964], No. 34736/65. Heading H1D. An ion source, in particular in a neutron generator, has an ion generation chamber 1 with a grid-like exit electrode 2 having a central aperture at least 1 mm. in diameter and an ion extraction electrode 5 having a single aperture 6 of a diameter at least equal to half the diameter of the region of the grid-like electrode. The resistance to gas flow of the extraction electrode is so low that the pressure is equal on either side and the ion flow is saturated at an accelerating voltage greater than 20 kv. The grid-like electrode may be in the form of a woven grid with a central hole or in the form of a spherical segment with a central aperture surrounded by one or, more rings of apertures. In the neutron generator shown, the ion extraction electrode 5 houses a decelerating electrode for electrons produced by the ions at or in the vicinity of the ion-collector electrode 11. Any electrons which, however, are accelerated through the aperture 3 are collected on a circular plate 13 which does not completely, fill the cross-section of the cylinder 1.
