Abstract

1464201 Thermionic cathode tubes VARIAN ASSOCIATES 9 July 1975 [10 July 1974] 28856/75 Heading H1D An electron tube comprises a cathode 28 with alternating emissive and non-emissive areas 38, 39 and a grid electrode comprising conductive bars 33 aligned with the non-emissive areas and an array of wires 37, of a size and spacing less than the bars, connected across the bars on the side nearest the cathode. The grid may be cylindrical or planar. The wires 37 are arranged diagonally to the bars in one direction or two to form a mesh. The wires of Ni are brazed to bars of Mo using Au. The cathode contains a spiral heater 25 and is closed by metal discs 30 and heat shield 31. These are connected by a ceramic plug 35 to a flanged disc 34 welded to the bars 33. A further grid aligned with the bars converts the triode to a tetrode. The arrangement increases the amplification factor by 10 fold. The tube is used as an on-off switch or h.f. amplifier.
