Abstract
1,032,208. Thermionic valves. WESTING- HOUSE ELECTRIC CORPORATION. Nov. 15, 1963 [Nov. 16, 1962], No. 45199/63. Heading H1D. A thermionic cathode comprises a heater 38 disposed between inner and outer tubes 30, 32, the space between the tubes being closed at one end 36, and a transverse shield 44, connected to one tube and spaced from the other, being provided at the other end. The cathode preferably has a length to diameter ratio of less than 2: 1 so that it is less susceptible to microphony. As shown, a nickel tube 32, carrying emissive coating 34, is supported from inner tube 30 by a washer 36. The cathode is secured to a mica, ceramic or glass support disc 24 by a rivet 42 which is a force fit within tube 30. Both rivet 42 and tube 30 are of low heat conducting material such as " Inconel " (Registered Trade Mark). Insulating disc 24 is supported by pins 26. Washer 36 may be replaced by a transverse flange integral with one of the tubes 30, 32 and welded to the other. Insulating disc 24 may act as the transverse heat shield, shield 44 being omitted.
