Abstract
810,202. Indirectly heated cathode. METROPOLITAN - VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO. Ltd. June 5, 1956 [June 10, 1955], No. 16796/55. Class 39(3) [Also in Group XL(a)] In manufacturing a thermionic cathode, the heater is first placed inside a hollow member of readily oxidizable metal such as magnesium or aluminium, this member then laid in a groove or duct in the cathode and the metal converted into oxide by chemical and/or thermal reaction. The cathode shown has a dished emissive surface 2, and a number of concentric circular grooves. The heater wire 3 is placed within two semi-circular channel members 14, 15 of magnesium, and the grooves then closed by a cover plate 13. The magnesium is converted into magnesium oxide by passing steam through the assembly, so that the heater is now embedded in sulating material. The cathode may alternatively be in the form of a hollow cylinder, with the heater passing through longitu dinal ducts (Fig. 5, not shown).
