Abstract
703,172. Magnetrons. ENGLISH ELECTRIC VALVE CO., Ltd. Oct. 29, 1951 [Jan. 11, 1951], No. 855/51. Class 39(1) A packaged magnetron (i.e. a magnetron in which part of the envelope is of ferromagnetic material) wherein the cathode structure includes a cathode support member mounted within a hole in a pole piece is characterized in that the support member is mounted in a sheath (separate from the pole-piece) of magnetic material at cathode potential and arranged to have good thermal insulation with respect to the cathode. In Fig. 3 the cathode 1 is attached to a support tube 7 which is fitted within a sheath 8 of magnetic material which is insulated from the polepiece 6a and is at cathode potential. The sheath 8 may be undercut at 81 so that it is thermally insulated from the cathode by a long conducting path and does not get sufficiently hot to be capable of thermionic emission; the material of the sheath should be such that it remains magnetic at the operating temperature. The lower pole-piece 6b may be provided with a sheath 8a to preserve the symmetry of the magnetic field.
