Abstract
755,819. Discharge apparatus. RAULAND CORPORATION. Dec. 29, 1954 [Dec. 30, 1953], No. 37546/54. Drawings to Specification. Class 39 (1). A getter which is fired by the passage of current is in series with a thermally responsive switch which is heated by its proximity to an electrode, thus operating to open the circuit. By this means the getter fires each time the tube is brought into use, until such time as the switch has become sufficiently hot to operate. The getter material may be contained in a wire of semi-circular section, or in a completely enclosed container suitably perforated. The getter wire may be wound round an electrode, such as the modulator of a cathode-ray tube, or round glass supports, and may conveniently be in parallel with the cathode heater leads. The switch may be of the bimetallic type, operated by heat from the cathode, or other suitable electrode. Suitable getter materials are barium, magnesium, and aluminium, mixed in the percentage proportion of 25 : 55 : 20 ; or 37 : 37 : 26; or 43 : 20 : 37. If the emissive cathode material is barium, barium from the getter may deposit on the cathode and give longer life.
