Abstract
1394370 Cathode materials ITT INDUSTRIES Inc 1 June 1972 [7 June 1971 19 Nov 1971] 25594/72 Heading H1D The electron emissivity of a cathode is increased by heating a cathode comprising a fused mass of electron emissive material above 525‹ C. and then cooling it in an inert atmosphere in an enclosure other than the enclosure in which the cathode is to be used. A cold cathode 1 for use in a fluorescent lamp comprises an iron cup 2 containing Ta and BaO as described in Specification 1,394,068. One or more cathodes are placed in a Ta tray 3 with a perforated led 5 and protected by a porous refractory blanket 4 of asbestos, quartz wool or paper. The tray and cathodes are placed in a bell jar which is either evacuated or filled with A, Xe or Kr and heated by an electric current to 1175‹ C. for 10 minutes then cooled. The cathodes remain unaffected by dry air for a short time. Alternatively cathodes are heated in a muffle furnace or by a h.f. coil. The method is used for electrodes for neon lamps and electron tubes; for fluorescent lamps it reduces the ignition voltage.
