Abstract
390,787. Discharge lamps. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., Magnet House, Kingsway, London.-(Assignees of Patent- Treuhand-Ges. f³r Elektrische Gl³hlampen; 11, Ehrenbergstrasse, Berlin.) Jan. 25, 1933, No. 2421. Convention date, Feb. 22, 1932. [Class 39 (i).] A heating resistance 16 in series with a U-shaped lamp is arranged between the arms 11 of the lamp, which is mounted within a capped vitreous container 1. A support 9, sealed into the pinch 4, is formed with a loop 10 to hold the lamp, and is provided with clamps 18 which serve as supports for the resistance 16. The lamp may comprise thermionic electrodes, heated by the discharge or by auxiliary means, or may comprise cold hollow electrodes 13, formed of sheet metal and coated with an alkaline-earth metal or compound. Alternatively, electron-emitting material may be contained within perforated sheet-metal electrodes. Starting is facilitated. by a wire 14 which is supported by the electrodes through glass beads 15, or by an internal or external carbon coating on the lamp formed by heating a carbonaceous cement. The filling of the lamp consists of sodium and a mixture of neon and helium at a pressure of 10 mms., and to reduce radiation of heat, the envelope may be evacuated or contain carbon dioxide at a pressure of 1-10 mms. The resistance consists of wire mounted between magnesia plates.
