Nov. 7, 1929, No. 33953. Convention date, July 12. Drawings to Specification. [Class 39 (i).] In a glow-discharge lamp having a filling of one or more metallic vapours and preferably also a gas, such as a rare gas, to facilitate starting, the pressure is maintained constant and independent of current and voltage variations by the provision of a side tube which contains the vaporizable metal and is kept, during discharge, at a temperature below that of the discharge lamp, but equal to that at which the metal has the desired vapour pressure. In one example, the filling consists of argon or helium and sodium vapour at a pressure of 0À1 to 0À2 mm. Sodium is situated in an iron container located at the end of the side tube which is heated by an electric-heater winding to a temperature of 250-300‹ C. The temperature of the glass wall of the discharge lamp is 350-400‹ C.
