Dec. 14, 1933, No. 35248. Convention date, Dec. 31, 1932. [Class 39 (i).] Discharge lamps of the type containing sodium vapour generated from metal heated to a high temperature by the discharge contain so small a quantity of sodium that all or the greater part is evaporated at the operating temperature and also contain a still smaller quantity of mercury. The lamp preferably also contains rare gas and thermionic electrodes. The quantity of mercury may be less than 10 per cent that of sodium, for example, 1 or 4-5 per cent according as the operating temperature is above 400‹ C. or is 300‹ C. This quantity of mercury does not suppress the sodium light but reduces time-lag when the lamp is used in television reception. The mercury may be introduced into the lamp separately or as an amalgam. Specification 391,971 is referred to.
