404,865. Arc lamps. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., Magnet House, Kingsway, London.-(Assignees of Patent-Treuhand-Ges. f³r Elektrische Gl³hlampen; 11, Ehrenbergstrasse, Berlin.) June 2, 1933, No. 16056. Convention date, June 11, 1932. [Class 39 (i).] An enclosed arc lamp having solid electrodes and a filling comprising a rare gas and a metallic vapour is provided with an amalgam which contains, preferably .01 to 2 per cent of an alkaline earth metal, and is not electrically connected either at starting or during running with an electrode. An amalgam containing .1 to .5 per cent of barium may be used. The alkaline earth metal may purify the rare gas which, usually, is argon. A filament bridging the electrodes may be used for starting and to radiate light or heat during operation.
