Abstract
377,554. Electric incandescent lamps. WESTINGHOUSE LAMP CO., Bloomfield, New Jersey, U.S.A.-(Assignees of Anderson, W. E. ; 31, Columbus Avenue, Montclair, New Jersey, U.S.A.) Dec. 14, 1931, No. 34639. Convention date, Dec. 13, 1930. [Class 39 (ii).] In electric incandescent lamps adapted for series connection, for example for Christmas-tree illumination, the failure of a lamp due to the breakage of the internal filament circuit is indicated by a glow discharge within that lamp. The filament 16 is supported on leading-in wires 13, 14 which are spaced apart by a glass bead 15, and are adapted to function as electrodes by providing a coating of material such as magnesium or aluminium which may be provided by inserting a small slug of the material within the coils of the filament, so that when the filament is heated the material is vaporized and cleans up the residual impurities and is deposited in a thin layer on the wires 13, 14. Alternatively, the vaporizable material may be mixed with a suitable binder and sprayed upon the filament, or the filament may be dipped into the dry powdered material. The lamp bulb 10 is provided with a gaseous filling of either neon or argon, or a mixture of these at a pressure of from 10 to 40 millimetres. During the normal operation of the lamp the illumination is derived entirely from the filament.
