382,931. Cut-out arrangements for electric incandescent lamps. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London.-(Assignees of Severin, C. ; 914, Helmsdale Avenue, Cleveland Heights, and Peters, L. R. ; 1132, Ansel Road, Cleveland, both in Ohio, U.S.A.) July 23, 1932, No. 20818. Convention date, July 23, 1931. [Class 39 (ii).] A cut-out for electric incandescent lamps adapted for series connection comprises a mass of paste 16, Figs. 1 and 3, adjacent to a bead 15 of insulating material supported by the leading-in wires 13, 14 within the bulb 10, the paste being of such resistance that normally it is nonconductive but becomes conductive upon the failure of the filament 12 and the consequent increase of voltage across the lamp terminals. The material of the cut-out consists preferably of a mixture of a metal powder, a finely powdered insulating material and a binder made up into a paste, the powdered insulating material preferably being non- hygroscopic. In the example the paste is made up of fine iron powder which has been reduced in hydrogen, together with powdered cryolite and a binder consisting of sodium silicate. The insulating bead 15 may be made of glass and provided with a depression 17 into which the pasty mass 16 enters.
