Abstract

Residual gases.-Vacuum lamp bulbs are aged by passing current through the filament to raise .it to incandescence and conducting an electric gas discharge through the glass of the bulb by applying a high potential to an electrode placed on its exterior. The bulb is heated to render it conductive unless it is made of a conductive glass, such as magnesium glass. The external electrode may be mounted on a rod or handle, or it may consist of a tin-foil or other metal coating on the bulb. Either alternating or direct current may be used for both the filament and the discharge currents.
