Abstract
383,360. Electric cut-outs. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London.-(Assignees of Severin, C. ; 914, Helmsdale Avenue, Cleveland Heights, and Peters, L. R. ; 1132, Ansel Road, Cleveland, both in Ohio, U.S.A.) Sept. 28, 1931, No. 27004. Convention date, Sept. 29, 1930. [Class 38 (i).] An electric incandescent lamp for use in a series system is provided with a normally inoperative shunt consisting of a metal spiral 15 which extends between the leading-in wires 12 and makes close contact with a film of oxide on at least one of them, the metal forming the spiral being of such resistance that, in the event of a breakdown of the filament 14, the voltage applied to the remaining lamps is not unduly high. The leading-in wires 12 may be made of nickel or copper, which can be oxidized by heating, for example when fusing them into a spacing-bead 13 of insulating material. The resistance wire 15 consists of tungsten, nickelchromium alloy, or other metal of comparatively high resistance. The wire 15 is attached to the leading-in wires 12 by engaging the latter between the helical turns, and beads 16 of insulating-material such as sodium silicate may be applied to the contact points to hold the wires in position.
