543,441. Glass manufacture. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., and STANWORTH, J. E. Jan. 9, 1941, No. 315. [Class 56] [Also in Group XXXVI] Relates to glass suitable for sheathing a copper coated lead-in wire that is to be sealed into the glass envelope of a sodium vapour electric discharge lamp. According to the invention, the glass comprises 60-65 per cent. of silica plus boric oxide plus alumina (the boric oxide and alumina both being less than 5 per cent.), 21-25 percent, of barium oxide plus calcium oxide (the calcium oxide being less than 7 per cent.), and 12.5-14 per cent. of soda plus potash (the potash being less than 5 per cent.). A preferred composition consists of 59.7 per cent. of silica, 22.8 per cent. of barium oxide, 13.1 per cent. of soda, and 4.4 per cent. of alumina. A lead-in sheathed with this glass may be sealed into a glass envelope which is coated on the inside with a sodium-resistant glass composed of 27.0 per cent. of alumina, 36.0 per cent. of barium oxide, 30.4 per cent. of boric oxide, 2.2 per cent. of potassium oxide, and 4.4 per cent. of sodium oxide.
