416,616. Discharge apparatus. FISCHER, M., FISCHER, M., and FISCHER, H., (trading as GLASWERK G. FISCHER), 32, Langewiesenerstrasse, Ilmenau, Thuringia, Germany. Oct. 20, 1933, No. 29140. Convention date, May 20. [Class 39 (i).] A glass which becomes strongly luminescent, when subjected to cathode radiation, is made by reducing the iron content below a very small amount which depends on the nature of the metallic compound that is used to give a characteristic colour to the luminescence. Thus a glass containing silver is luminescent if the content of iron, calculated as Fe2O3, does not exceed 0.25 per cent. The output of light from an electric discharge tube made from such a glass is stated to be increased considerably, and the colour of the emitted light can be influenced. The glass is also suitable for the envelopes of Crookes' tubes, R÷ntgen tubes, and cathode-ray tubes.
