Abstract

400,756. Discharge lamps. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., Magnet House, Kingsway, London.-(Assignees of Patent- Treuhand-Ges. f³r Elektrische Gl³hlampen; 11, Ehrenbergstrasse, Berlin.) Sept. 6, 1932, No. 24845. Convention date, Nov. 6, 1931. [Class 39 (i).] Lamps giving light, including infra-red rays, approximating to daylight are filled with a mixture of rare gas and caesium or rubidium vapour and are so operated that the vapour pressure rises above À02 mm. corresponding to a temperature of 150‹ C. Caesium and rubidium vapours giving the same pressure at the same temperature may be used together. The rare gas may be argon or neon at a pressure of a few mms. Oxide cathodes as described in Specification 344,497 are used ; the electrodes in the tube shown each comprise a bar 3 of alkaline earth oxide in a heater winding 2 with two leads 4, 5, the operating current being applied to both leads after the electrodes have been heated. The glass of the envelope 1 is a borosilicate softening above 500‹ C. and containing alumina and less than 50 per cent of silica as described in Specification 351,245. Heat losses are reduced by sheaths 8 near the electrodes or over the whole tube as described in Specification 341,601. The envelope 1 may be surrounded by an outer glass envelope with the intermediate space evacuated. Caesium or rubidium is introduced as a body or coating 7. Details of a tube filled with neon at 10 mm. and operating with a vapour pressure of 50- 100 mm. corresponding to 450-500‹ C. are specified. Tube temperatures of 400‹ C. are also specified.
