Abstract

449,127. Thermionic valves. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London. Sept. 13, 1935, No. 25461. Convention date, Sept. 13, 1934. [Class 39 (i)] A method of gettering an evacuated ther mionic discharge device comprising a metal envelope con taining an electrode and a getter positionec within the envelope either directly upon or near to the wall there of, consists in heating the envelope at a localized position or the exterior wall of the envelope opposite the getter and causing a portion of the heat to reach the getter by conduction through the envelope to flash the getter. In the rectifier shown, a magnesium strip 13 is welded to the interior of the envelope 1 which may be of iron, tin or nickel. The directly-heated cathode 8 comprises loops of coated nickel strip. The header member 3 carries cathode conductor seals 4 of the kind disclosed in Specification 179,779, [Class 36], and the metal evacuating tube 9 sealed as in Specification 449,126, and is welded to a flanged portion of the envelope. The getter may be contained in a pocket or dent in the envelope and baffles or shields may prevent deposition of getter material in undesired parts, as described in Specification 443,767. Alternatively, the getter may be contained in a capsule supported on a rigid wire close to or touching the envelope so as to receive heat therefrom. The method may be applied to devices containing gas or vapour, such as argon or mercury, and to electrostatically or magnetically controlled thermionic arc discharge devices. Specification 300,403, [Class 39 (i)], also is referred to.
