Abstract

1419099 Discharge tubes; electric incandescent lamps THORN ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 10 Aug 1973 [11 Aug 1972] 37648/72 Headings H1D and H1F A method of manufacturing electric devices having envelopes which contain dosings of at least one volatile and/or gaseous constitutent includes the steps of placing a sealed capsule 20 containing a dosing substance inside an envelope 11, sealing the envelope and, after sealing, perforating the capsule by directing a beam 25 of radiation from a laser through the envelope and focusing the beam on to the surface of the capsule 20 thereby enabling the dosing substance to be released into the interior of the envelope 11. The capsule 20 may be made of iron or steel but is preferably made of aluminium which acts as a getter, particularly when the dosing substance is mercury 21 which forms an efficient gettering amalgam with aluminium vapourized from the capsule material. The method may be applied to thermionic valves, discharge lamps or to tungsten-halogen filament lamps in which case the dosing substance is a volatile halide or halogen. As shown the capsule 20 is connected by a spur wire 22 to a lead wire 16 of a discharge lamp having a fluorescent coating 12 which is omitted from the end of the envelope 11 to leave a clear area 13 through which the laser beam 25 is directed. The capsule 20 may alternatively be located within a sealed tubulation attached to the envelope and opening to the interior thereof, the capsule being perforated to release the dosing substance and the tubulation then being tipped off and thereby detached from the envelope complete with the emptied capsule. The envelope 11 may contain argon or other starting gas in addition to a dosing substance of mercury or sodium. Specification 1,419,098 is referred to.
