Abstract

1,147,140. Tubular lamps. SYLVANIA ELECTRIC PRODUCTS Inc. 8 March, 1968 [10 March, 1967], No. 11533/68. Heading H1F. A tungsten-halogen incandescent lamp has a tubular quartz envelope 1 closed at one end by a press seal 2, a long lead-in wire 5, a short lead-in wire 6, a filament 3 extending longitudinally of the envelope between the wires 5, 6 and a quartz rod 10 at right angles to the filament, to which the wires 5, 6 are secured. The wires 5, 6 extend into the seal 2 being united by molybdenum ribbons 11, 12 to the external lead-in wires. A third support wire (not shown) lying in a plane perpendicular to that of the figure, extends from the middle of the filament to the middle of the rod 10. The tip of the leadin wire 5 is bent upwards parallel to the filament and rests in the residual tip of the exhaust tube at the top of the lamp. In making the lamp, the wires 5, 6 and one end of the third support wire are first fused to the rod 10, a filament is mounted on the wires, the molybdenum ribbons are attached, the assembly is mounted in the tube and the end of this is squeezed to form the press seal. The lamp is then exhausted and an atmosphere of iodine and inert gas, e.g. nitrogen, introduced through the tube which is finally sealed leaving a tip 4 to accommodate the end of the wire 5.
