Abstract

1,165,940. Electric incandescent lamps. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. 8 Nov., 1967 [12 Dec., 1966], No. 50827/67. Heading H1F. [Also in Division C1] An electric lamp has an envelope 1 of fused silica with flattened pinch seals 2a, 2b at the ends, a planar filament consisting of side-by-side segments 5 of coiled tungsten wire joined at their ends by bight portions 7a, 7b, the outermost ends of the filament being connected to leadin conductors 10 extending through the pinch 2a, support wires 13a in the upper pinch 2a engaging the bight portions 7a and support wires 13b in the lower pinch 2b engaging the bight portions 7b, and a filling of inert gas (e.g. argon) and a halogen. The envelope may be enclosed in an outer envelope 15 containing nitrogen or helium, being supported by conducting wires 16 connected to posts 25 attached to the base 17 of the envelope by ferrules 23 sealed to the base. Wires 21 sealed in the lower pinch 2b are connected to the conductors 16 by wires 22 extending from the conductors and looped round the wires 21 to allow for relative longitudinal movement of the lead-in wires and envelope 1. The conductors 16 are welded to wires 18, the ends of which are embedded in the pinch 2a, for supporting the envelope 1, and are connected to the ends of the filament by fuses 20. The support wires 13a and the inner portions 9 of the lead-in wires 10 are preferably connected by a bridge 14 of vitreous material e.g. quartz or silica glass. In assembling the lamp, the supports 13a and lead-in wires 9 are pressed into the softened surface of the bridge 14 by a knife-like tool.
