Abstract

1,043,172. Electric incandescent lamps. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. June 7, 1963 [June 18, 1962], No. 22814/63. Heading H1F1 An electric lamp comprises an outer glass bulb 1 having a neck, an inner envelope 3 consisting of a single unitary length of glass tubing have a closed inner end and sealed to the neck of the outer bulb at its outer end, the inner envelope having a single pinch seal portion 7 between the ends forming an inner chamber 8 in which is a filament 9 carried by a pair of lead-in conductors 10, 11, passing through the seal. The chamber 8 may have a filling of inert gas and a halogen such as iodine. In making the lamp, a button is first upset on the end of an exhaust tube 12 and an intermediate filament support is sealed thereon. Lead-in wires 10, 11 are then arranged on opposite sides of the tube and a filament 9 secured between them, the end of the intermediate support wire being looped round the centre of the filament. A glass tube 3 is then slipped over the assembly and heated by burners, in the vicinity of the end of the tube 12, the tube 3 being sealed by compressing the heated area in a pair of relieved jaws to avoid closing the tube 12, a flow of inert or reducing gas being maintained through the tube 12 durng heating to avoid oxidation of the filament and supports. The tube is then exhausted and filled with inert gas, e.g. argon, krypton or xenon, and a small quantity of iodine vapour, the tube 3 being inverted and the lower end cooled to condense the vapour during this process. The seal area 7 is then heated and closed and an aperture 14 opened from the exhaust tube to the outside of the tube 3. The tube 3 is then sealed at the neck into the outer glass bulb 1, which is then evacuated and gas filled through the exhaust tube 12 which is finally tipped off. In a modification, the closed upper end of the tube 3 may have an exhaust tube sealed to it, the exhaust tube 12 being used only for exhausting and gas filling the outer bulb.
