Abstract

1,004,776. Indirectly-heated cathodes. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. March 13, 1962 [March 15, 1961], No. 9584/62. Heading H1D. [Also in Division H5] An indirectly-heated cathode comprises a nickel alloy support clad on its inner surface with an alloy of chromium, nickel and iron which has been fired in a wet hydrogen atmosphere to produce a highly heat-absorbing surface layer including an oxide of chromium. As shown, the cathode is provided with a tungsten heater coated with an insulating mixture of aluminium oxide and aluminium nitrate, and further coated with a heat-radiating layer comprising aluminium oxide, aluminium nitrate, and either 1 to 20% by weight finely-divided carbon, or 1 to 40% pulverized tungsten. The use of a conductive coating on the heater which contacts the cathode sleeve also avoids capacitance variations between cathode and heater. Cathode wall thicknesses are given, and instead of being cylindrical the cathode may be planar, cupshaped or dished.
