Abstract
922,440. Cathode heaters. RADIO CORPORATION OF AMERICA. July 21, 1961 [Aug. 19, 1960], No. 26618/61. Class 39 (3). A cathode heater for indirectly heated cathodes comprises a base wire 13 having an insulating coating 23 thereon, and a second coating 23, over said insulating coating, comprised of a mixture of aluminium oxide and material having a greater thermal radiant emissivity than aluminium oxide. The insulating coating preferably consists of aluminium oxide and the second coating a mixture of fine particles of metallic tungsten, molybdenum, silicon carbide, tungsten carbide, tantalum carbide, vanadium sesquioxide and/or niobium dioxide with 50% by weight of aluminium oxide. The layers are preferably formed by spraying; alternatively, drag coating or cataphoretic coating may be used. In a specific example for the preparation of the second coating, 10 gms. of aluminium oxide was mixed with 50 c.c. of ammonium tungstate solution, allowed to dry and fired in a hydrogen atmosphere for 1 hour at 1000 C., and 108 gm. of the resulting aluminium oxide/tungsten mixture ball milled for 30 mins. with 100 c.cs. methanol and 200 c.cs. of a binder comprising 64.5 gms. nitrocellulose, 1455 c.cs. butyl acetate and 1355 c.cs. diacetone alcohol.
