Abstract

1463125 Metal oxide-coated glass RCA CORPORATION 20 June 1974 [20 June 1973] 27393/74 Heading C1M [Also in Division B2] An article comprises a substrate 2 composed of a glass which comprises more than 3% by weight of alkali metal oxide, the substrate comprising a surface region 4 at least partially depleted of alkali metal ions to a depth of at least 400 Š, the alkali metal ions not being replaced by other ions except, possibly, protons, and a transparent semi-conductive metal oxide film 8 on said surface region. The metal oxide film 8 is preferably applied by spraying the ion-depleted substrate glass 2, while in an oven at, e.g. 450-500‹ C., with a solution of a compound which may be oxidized to the corresponding metal oxide. Preferably the spray is formed by mixing the solution with a carrier gas in an atomizer. The oxide film 8 may be tin oxide doped with antimony oxide (in which case the solution may comprise SnCl 4 and SbCl 3 in ethanol, water and hydrochloric acid) or indium oxide doped with tin oxide (when the solution may comprise InCl 3 and SnCl 4 in methanol, water and hydrochloric acid). The glass substrate 2 may have the composition (weight per cent): (a) SiO 2 63À2, SrO 10À7, K 2 O 9À9, Na 2 O 7À5, Al 2 O 3 3À5, CaO 1À6 and MgO 1À2; or (b) SiO 2 50À6, PbO 21À8, K 2 O 9À8, Na 2 O 5À9, Al 2 O 3 4À8, CaO 3À7 and MgO 2À6. The depletion of alkali metal ions (preferably at least 90% of which are removed in said surface region 4) may be carried out by heating the glass substrate 2 in an oven 20 (e.g. to 250-450‹ C.), and subjecting it to an A.C. or D.C. voltage (e.g. 10-425 V.) in a nitrogen atmosphere. The substrate 2 may have electrodes 10, 12 (e.g. of colloidal graphite, platinum or palladium) applied thereto, current being supplied from A.C./D.C. supply 18. Attached to electrodes 10, 12 may be graphite felt pads 14, 16. The oxidecoated glass products may be used as electrodes or resistors.
