Abstract
666,053. Cathode materials and processing. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL, Ltd. Sept. 9, 1949 [Sept. 14, 1948], No. 23374/49. Class 39 (i). A thermionic cathode consists of a sintered mixture of thorium oxide and a refractory metal, such as tungsten, to which is sintered a coating of thorium oxide without a supporting metal layer. Equal quantities of thoria and tungsten are mixed, compressed to form a tube (dimensions are specified), sintered in hydrogen at 1900 C., coated with thoria 50 microns thick, and again sintered. Molybdenum end caps may be provided by a mixture of molybdenum powder and ammonium molybdate and are sintered to molybdenum leads. The emission may be 50 amps per square cm. at 2200 K. The cathodes may be heated by the gas discharge in a lamp.
