Abstract

1,193,864. Electrode materials. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. 9 May, 1967 [12 May, 1966], No. 21427/67. Heading H1D. A low-pressure mercury-vapour lamp stated to give rise to reduced interference radiation has two thermionic electrodes, each electrode consisting of a support coated with a mixture which includes an electron emissive substance together with elemental boron, or a compound of boron with oxygen, chromium, tungsten, or molybdenum, the electron emissive substance containing at least one alkaline earth metal oxide, and the quantity of boron or boron compound lying in the range 0À1 to 15%-and preferably 0À1 to 10% by weight of the alkaline earth oxide. The compounds boron trioxide, chromium triboride, tungsten monoboride, and molybdenum diboride are specifically referred to, the grain size of the boron or boron compound being not greater than 30, and preferably less than 15, the mean grain size of the electron emissive particles. The mixture may additionally include zirconium in amount from 1 to 5% by weight of the electron emissive substance. A mixture of the boron or boride, zirconium, and an 8: 5: 7 mixture of barium, calcium and strontium carbonates may be coated on a tungsten wire support which is subsequently heated to decompose the carbonates to oxides. Examples of compositions are given.
