Abstract

731,421. Cathode materials and processing. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and WRIGHT, D. A. Jan. 2, 1952 [Jan. 15, 1951], No. 1095/51. Class 39 (1). The electron-emissive material consists wholly or mainly of thorium carbide and is coated on a body of refractory metal of higher work function. The cathode may consist of tungsten or tantalum sheet, helix or rod coated with or containing carbide or of a sintered pellet or rod which may have recesses at the end housing the carbide. A tantalum support may be coated with tungsten or tungsten carbide or it may be carburized. Specified proportions of thorium and carbon may be mixed into a paste with a solution of nitrocellulose and applied by painting, spraying or electrophoresis and heated in a vacuum or rare gas to 1900-2000‹ K. or it may be extruded and sintered before or after it is arranged on the support. Thorium carbide may be mixed with 5-10 per cent of tungsten or tantalum which may be sintered on to the support. Operating temperatures and current emissions are specified. Two cathodes, one at each end, may be used in a high-pressure lamp containing mercury which may be mixed cadmium, zinc or thallium, or of xenon at one atmosphere.
