Abstract
1525005 Cathode materials and processing BBC BROWN BOVERI & CO Ltd 23 Oct 1975 [25 Oct 1974] 43623/75 Heading H1D A thermionic cathode with an emissive monolayer of T, La or Th includes a compound which releases one of the elements by a replenishment reaction during cathode operation and Pd, Pt, Rh or Ru to promote diffusion of the Y, La or Th to the monolayer and prevent impoverishment due to evaporation during high temperature operation. Preferred cathodes comprise sintered powdered W, Mo or Ta bodies containing carbide to reduce the compound in the form of an oxide. In one example Mo and La 2 O 3 powder mixture is compressed; reduced in flowing H 2 at 1000‹ C; sintered in H 2 at 1700‹ C.; cut into blanks by spark erosion and polished; electroplated with Pt; heated at 1300‹ C. to diffuse the Pt and anneal; then heated at 1700‹ C. in benzene and H 2 to form a Mo 2 C layer between the Pt layer and Mo-La 2 O 3 substrate: the last step may be carried out before the Pt plating. Alternatively the initial mixture may contain 0À5% Pt and the plating step omitted. The cathodes contain 0-05 to 10% Y, La or Th and 0À01 to 5% Pd, Pt, Rh or Ru. The cathode may be drawn into a wire.
