Abstract
731,422. Cathode materials and processing. M-0 VALVE CO., Ltd., and WRIGHT, D. A. Jan. 2, 1952 [Jan. 15, 1951], No. 1096/51. Class 39 (1). Thorium carbide constitutes at least one half of the content of the electron -emissive substance. Tantalum, tungsten or molybdenum, which is roughened, carburized or coated with tungsten carbide or with a sintered layer of tungsten powder, is painted with a paste which consists of a specified mixture of thorium, carbon and a nitrocellulose binder and heated to 1900-2000‹ K. in vacuum or rare gas. The metal base can be coated by spraying or electrophoresis; the cathode can consist entirely of sintered thorium carbide and it is applicable to an amplifier, magnetron, modulator, rectifier, oscillator or demountable tube and can be heated directly or indirectly or by electron bombardment from an auxiliary cathode as in a magnetron. Operating temperatures and current emissions are specified. Specifications 240,560, [Class 39 (i)], and 731,421 are referred to.
