391,750. Thermionic cathodes. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London.-(Assignees of Fonda, G. R. ; 1028, Parkwood Boulevard, Schenectady, New York, U.S.A.) July 27, 1931, No. 21406. Convention date, July 29, 1930. Void [Published under Sect. 91 of the Acts]. [Class 39 (i).] A thoriated tungsten or other cathode of the adsorbed film type is activated by incandescing in the presence of a gas, such as hydrogen, argon or nitrogen. The cathode may be flashed at 3000‹ K. for one minute in hydrogen at atmospheric pressure. It is stated that the grain structure of the foundation metal is coarsened by flashing in gas, thereby reducing the rate of diffusion of the high emission material to the surface. The cathode may be carburized subsequently by heating in the vapour of benzol or similar hydrocarbon. Specifications 148,132, 184,446, and 218,630, fall in Class 39 (i), Electric lamps, Arc &c], are referred to.
