The invention relates to hot cathodes in which in a high melting point
Base metal contains highly emissive metal. An example of such
The cathode is the thoriated tungsten cathode, the thorium oxide with or without reducing agent,
such as carbon o. The like. Contains, and in which an adsorbed during operation
Forms surface layer of metallic thorium. Such cathodes
are usually subjected to a heat treatment at a temperature which
is above the normal operating temperature of the hot cathode. Through this so-called
Activation process, the electron emission of the cathode is significantly increased.
When using such cathodes, which are a material with a opposite to the carrier material
contain increased emissivity, this activation process is not carried out
they show little or no increase in emission in comparison
to a cathode that does not contain this material.
According to the invention, the effectiveness and the service life of such cathodes, in particular thoriated tungsten cathodes, is considerably increased in that the activation by briefly burning up in an atmosphere of gases that do not react with the filament in a manner that interferes with the activation process, e.g. B. of hydrogen, argon or nitrogen, is made under a pressure such as the level of one atmosphere. The gas pressure must be so great that evaporation of the electrode material is prevented. Burning up takes about a minute and takes place with tungsten cathodes up to a temperature of 3000 0 absolute. In the case of other metals, for example molybdenum, the heating must not be driven so high in accordance with the lower melting point. In the case of a tungsten cathode containing thorium oxide, for example, which has the shape of a filament, the heating is expediently carried out by a current passing through, and the filament should take on the required temperature as quickly as possible.
According to a further idea of the invention, the cathode is briefly after this
Burning up a second activation process at a lower temperature, like them
when activating in a vacuum is common.
The activation at this low temperature can also be carried out in a known manner
be connected to a carbonation. For this purpose, a steam, the carbon
chemically bonded, z. B. benzene or another hydrocarbon initiated
and the cathode be brought to the annealing temperature, so that carbon -on
you are leaving.
Kristalle vorhanden, die noch wesentlich größer sind.ίο The cathodes produced in this way have when they are in vacuum tubes at temperatures of approximately 2000 ° abs. are operated, a higher initial emission than cathodes, which are not subjected to the activation process in a gas. They also last about ten times longer than the cathodes that are not treated in this way. The beneficial effect of the activation process according to the invention in the case of cathodes which contain a material of higher emissivity than the carrier material can be attributed to the fact that a change in the crystal structure of the metal occurs as a result of the heat treatment at the high temperature. It has been found that the grain size of the carrier metal increases markedly as a result of the activation. The diffusion of the highly emissive material now apparently takes place more slowly in a coarse-grained material than in a fine-grained material. The service life of such a cathode seems to be largely determined by the time that the highly emissive material, e.g. B. Thorium, needed to get from the inside of the crystals to the surface, where it evaporates. In a cathode with a coarse-grained metal structure, the rate of diffusion of thorium or the like is now reduced to such an extent that, although sufficient thorium still reaches the surface to replace the loss of evaporating thorium, an excess of thorium on the surface is avoided. A metal that in a gas temperature to about 3000 0 abs. is heated, has a grain size that is at least three times as large as when the metal is not subjected to the heat treatment. There are also crystals in the metal that are much larger.
reduziertem Material, also z.
The heat treatment in a gas atmosphere according to the invention also has
other advantages. When activated in a vacuum arises from the accumulation of
reduced material, e.g. B. Thorium, a certain state of equilibrium.
On the other hand, when activated in a gas atmosphere, there appears to be a strong accumulation of
Thorium enter, which, as already stated, results in an increased lifespan
when the cathode is operated at a low temperature in a vacuum.
