Abstract
586,000. Cathode materials; electron multipliers. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd. Jan. 27, 1944, No. 1588. Convention date, Jan. 27, 1943. [Class 39 (i)] A secondary-electron emitting material comprises a layer of chromic oxide covered with a suitable activating material such as caesium or rubidium. The layer may be thick enough to show the typical green colour or, preferably, is made so thin (10-<4>-10-<3> cms.) that interference colours appear. It is prepared by heating degassed pure chromium, plated on iron, or an alloy with iron, nickel or cobalt, in oxygen to produce the thin layer, or in moist hydrogen to produce the thick layer. Subsequently, the activating metal is vaporized on to the layer, baked at 250 C., heated in oxygen and again baked. The emission is stable up to 500 or 600 C., and makes the material suitable for use in a beam mixer tube having two secondary emitting electrodes 16, 18 and collector 17.
