Abstract

594,338. Electron multipliers. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd. Oct. 8, 1941, No. 13019. Convention date, Oct. 8, 1940. [Class 39 (i)] In an electron-multiplier with the primary photo cathode 2 and the secondary emitting electrodes 3, 5, 6, 7 both formed by alloying caesium on a film of metal such as antimony arsenic or bismuth, the film on the cathode is thinner than those on the electrodes 3, 5, 6, 7 so that the proportion of caesium in the alloy is higher. The proportion of caesium in the alloy in the cathode is between 1¢ to 3 times that in the alloy of the secondary electrodes. A wide mesh grid 4 directs the electrons from the cathode to the electrode 3 ; the grid anode 8 is surrounded by a shield 9. The metal films are supported on a nickel or other base metal. The metal films are formed on the bases in separate chambers and then the bases are mounted by mica spacers in the envelope 1 which is evacuated and baked at 150‹ C. ; caesium is vaporized from a tab within the envelope while the electrodes are maintained at a temperature between room and 200‹ C. The caesium may be vaporized first on to the envelope walls and from thence to the electrodes. A further baking at between 150‹ to 170‹ C. is then made.
