Abstract

[Class 39 (i)] The photo-cathode in a cell is formed by alloying an alkali metal with another metal baking the composite layer produced and thereafter oxidizing. On a support a layer of antimony is deposited and while this is maintained at a temperature between 140 and 190‹C. caesium is distilled thereon ; or the caesium and antimony may be deposited alternately; or the two elements may be deposited simultaneously. When used as the cathode in an electron-multiplier, the electrodes of the multiplier section are first oxidized and then caesiated after which antimony is deposited on the primary cathode and then caesium is distilled thereon, the cathode being subsequently baked and oxidized. Bismuth or arsenic may be used instead of antimony.
