567,441. Photo electric cells. CINEMA-TELEVISION, Ltd., and SOMMER, A. July 20, 1943, No. 11806. [Class 39 (i)] In electron discharge devices comprising a photo - electric cathode and one or more secondary electron-emitting electrodes, such as electron multipliers, iconoscopes, image dissectors, &c., the alkali metals used to sensitize the photo-electric cathode and the secondaryemitting electrodes are different. As applied to a multiplier photo-cell, the cathode consists of an antimony-caesium layer, while the secondary emitting electrodes are of silveroxygen-rubidium. In the manufacture of the device, the secondary-emitting electrode is formed prior to the cathode, so that the alkali metal for sensitizing the latter does not deposit on the former. The cathode surface may be formed on the envelope or on a separate support such as silver or mica. After the sensitizing of each electrode, the envelope is baked at a temperature of 150-200‹ C. for 10 minutes.
