Abstract

639,995. Electrode materials and processing. ELECTRIC & MUSICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Jan. 21, 1947, No. 1849. [Class 39 (i)] Loss of sensitivity upon cooling of discharge devices, e.g. those devices including photoelectric electrodes and secondary electronemitting dynodes upon which a photo-electric substance and a metal have been caused to react or alloy by heating, is substantially reduced by depositing an additional quantity of a metal which reacts with the photo-electric material. A highly evacuated glass envelope has a photo-electric cathode on its inner surface and a plurality of nickel louvre dynodes arranged at intervals along the axis, antimony having been evaporated and condensed on the appropriate places followed by caesium. Those places upon which it is not desired to deposit are coated with material which absorbs caesium. The deposition is in the ratio of three parts caesium to one part antimony. After baking to alloy the materials, and removing excess caesium, an additional small quantity of antimony is evaporated selectively on to the photocathode which is additionally baked and if necessary superficially oxidized. Other alkali metals than caesium may be used and bismuth replaced by antimony. The known method of caesiating a silver oxide layer followed by deposition of silver is referred to.
