Abstract
691,795. Cathode materials and processing. ELECTRIC & MUSICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. June 13, 1951 [June 22, 1950], No. 15573/50. Class 39(i). In the manufacture of a photo-electric or secondary-electron-emitting surface, layers of bismuth and silver are deposited, and the bismuth is oxidised through the silver layer solely by exposure to.oxygen. Bismuth and silver layers are condensed on to the glass envelope of a photoelectric cell into which oxygen is then admitted at room temperature; the oxygen passes through the silver layer to oxidise, wholly or partially, the bismuth to a depth of 5-10 atoms. The bismuth layer may be 30 atoms thick and the silver layer 5-10 atoms. The cell is exhausted and the semitransparent or opaque cathode sensitised by exposure to caesium. The layers may be condensed through a mesh on to a target for a television tube; alternatively a composite layer may be aggregated by heat to form a mosaic electrode.
