644,330. Cathode materials and processing. ELECTRIC & MUSICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Oct. 31, 1947, No. 29061. [Class 39 (i)] A method of making a photo-electric or secondary emissive cathode comprises providing a metal deposit inside an envelope before it is exhausted so that the deposit is exposed to air, exhausting the envelope, oxidizing the deposit before baking the envelope, and subsequently treating the deposit with an alkali metal. The deposit may be of bismuth and silver, or antimony may be used instead of bismuth, and gold instead of silver ; the deposit may be formed outside the envelope on a support which is subsequently inserted in the envelope. The invention may be applied to the manufacture of television transmission tubes with transparent mosaic screens, or photo-electric cells, or electron multipliers.
