Abstract
984,936. Cathode-ray tubes; cathode materials. FERNSEH G.m.b.H. Sept. 28, 1961 [Oct. 12, 1960], No. 34866/61. Heading H1D. An electron discharge device has a photoemissive layer 3 arranged to be illuminated through a transparent substrate 2 carrying the layer, wherein at least one surface of the substrate is treated to scatter incident light. The substrate is preferably of glass and forms part of the vacuum envelope of the device. The surface is treated by sand- or shot-blasting or by chemical etching. Alternatively, the surface of the substrate upon which the photo-emissive layer is applied may be previously coated with a layer of opal glass. Suitable transparent photo-cathodes consist of alloys of antimony and caesium, or antimony, potassium, sodium and caesium.
