Abstract

859,597. Image intensifier tubes. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. Jan. 29, 1959 [Feb. 3, 1958], No. 3453/58. Class 39(1). An electron image intensifying screen comprises a transparent fluorescent layer 1 with a supporting carrier 30, together of thickness not more than 20Á, having an electron permeable metal coating 7 on one face of the layer and a photo-electron emissive layer 3 on the opposite face. The layer 1, which is of non- granulated material of thickness between 1Á and 10Á, may be of zinc sulphide willemite or calcium tungstate but is preferably amorphous zinc sulphide activated by manganese. The electron permeable coating is of aluminium and the photo emissive layer of caesium activated antimony. The supporting carrier 30 may be of magnesium oxide, aluminium oxide, wire mesh or other inert heat resistant material. In manufacturing the screen a glass plate may be provided with a film of resin on to which zinc sulphide is evaporated in a vacuum. The resin is then dissolved to release the phosphor layer which is transferred to a wire mesh and baked to 1000‹C. to reactivate the phosphor. The supported layer is next provided with an aluminium coating on one side and an antimony layer on the other and finally this last layer is activated by caesium vapour. The intensifying screen may be used in an optical image intensifier, being placed between a photo cathode and the final fluorescent screen or may be used in a television camera tube.
