Abstract
724,202. Electrode materials and processing. ELECTRIC & MUSICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Jan. 16, 1953 [Jan. 28, 1952], No. 2266/52. Class 39 (1). An electron discharge device which includes a photo-electrically sensitive surface and a further surface liable to reflect unwanted light on the sensitive surface, is characterized in that the further surface is provided with a light absorbing coating comprising alkali metal and a substance which blackens when exposed to the alkali metal; the substance is preferably lead, but may be tin, germanium or silicon. In one embodiment the ion trap mesh 5 of a c.p.s. television pick-up tube is coated with lead 7 to a thickness of about 1000 A.U. by evaporation; during the sensitization of the mosaic 1 caesium is admitted to the tube in the normal way, and the lead coating is thus exposed to caesium. Other meshes mounted in front of the target of a television pick-up tube, e.g. a stabilizing mesh, may be treated in the same way, and the invention may also be applied to photo-electric cells. According to the Provisional Specification antimony or bismuth may be used for the substance which blackens when exposed to an alkali metal.
